About the Department
The Department of Afaan Oromoo and Literature is one of the oldest departments of Mattu University, It was established in 2005 under the College of Social Science and Humanities with 52 students & With 10 highly qualified academic staff members. The department has given high-quality teaching and research in cutting-edge thrust areas of language, literature, folklore, culture and communication areas.
The department offers a well-structured academic program, including master’s programs; or MA degree; delivered through summer, and weekend modalities. It also provides a strong undergraduate program available in the same flexible formats. To ensure a comprehensive education, the curriculum is divided into three key branches:
Currently, the department serves 751 students in different modalities and it has successfully graduated 980 professionals who are now contributing to various sectors. Additionally, the department has conducted several Community service with educational bureau & different institutions, further strengthening its research and community engagement efforts.
Committed to advancing knowledge and innovation, the department has achieved 4 reputable Scopus-indexed publications, demonstrating its strong research culture and impact in the field. Faculty members actively engage in cutting-edge research on language & literature culture , and, influencing policy and practice at national and international levels. Furthermore, the department remains deeply involved in community service, providing expertise and solutions to local and regional on teaching learning issues. With a firm commitment to academic excellence, research leadership, and community engagement, the Department of Afaan Oromoo & Literature Studies continues to be a for quality education.

I am honored to write this message on behalf of the Department of Afaan Oromo, Literature & Communication. Our department is dedicated to preparing skilled graduates who can:
- Teach Afaan Oromo effectively: We equip them with the knowledge and tools to become passionate and inspiring language educators.
- Preserve and document Afaan Oromo culture and literature: We guide them in collecting, archiving, and promoting these vital cultural treasures, bridging the gap in scholarly resources.
Our strong faculty are the backbone of our success. They are passionate about Afaan Oromo, Oromo culture, and the field of Literature & Communication. They continuously strive to:
- Stay at the forefront of language: We emphasize awareness of modern language issues like multilingualism, bilingualism, cross-cultural communication, and mass communication, ensuring our students have a comprehensive understanding of Afaan Oromo in today's world.
I have immense faith in my staff's dedication. They are committed to using their expertise in Afaan Oromo, Literature & Communication to benefit society in various ways:
- Preparing diverse professionals: We aim to equip our graduates to flourish in various careers, from researcher and public relations officer to news reporter, editor, translator, and artist.
