About the Department
Chemical Engineering is the most interesting and Universal field throughout the world gradually emerged around 1922 at United States of America. Chemical Engineering started to be offered as a program in Ethiopian higher education institutions and universities in the early of 2000s. Here at Mattu University it was launched in 2016 G.C. under faculty of Engineering and Technology (currently known by College of Engineering and Technology). Currently Chemical Engineering Department has 18 active staffs. The department has graduated four batch of around 192 students in BSc up to this year (2024/2025 G.C). Almost all the department today has well equipped laboratory equipment and has long time experienced staffs.
Program Educational Outcomes (PEO)
PEO 1: To produce Chemical Engineers who have understanding of Chemical Engineering principles, Applications through integrating the knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and in close collaboration with fellow engineering sciences like material, computer, mechanical, electrical and civil
PEO 2: Occupies a unique position at the interface between molecular sciences and engineering.
PEO 3: To produce competent and qualified researchers that can conduct scientific research in Process and product design and optimization, Environmental quality, sustainable energy, Agricultural product enhancing technology, industry development, medicine formulation and analyze complex problems.
PEO4: To work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, polymers, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries, among others.
PEO 5: To produce professionals in designing equipment and processes for large- scale chemical manufacturing, plan and test methods of manufacturing products and treating by products, and supervise production.

Well Come to Chemical Engineering Department
As the head of the Chemical Engineering Department, I want to take a moment to reflect on our mission and vision, which guide our efforts and aspirations. Our department is dedicated in providing a high-quality education and conducting impactful research as well as community service in the field of chemical engineering.
At our department, we strive to create a stimulating learning environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of subjects, including chemical thermodynamics, process design, reaction engineering, and environmental engineering. Our goal is to equip students with a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge, as well as practical skills through hands-on laboratory experiments and industrial training.
In our department, we recognize the critical role of chemical engineering in advancing agricultural practices and improving the efficiency, sustainability, and productivity of agricultural processes. We are happy of including an indigenous knowledge to the existing curriculum in terms of agriculture, medicine as well as food processing in process design. We offer a specialized curriculum that combines the fundamental principles of chemical engineering with a deep understanding of agricultural systems and technologies. In addition to classroom learning, our department is actively involved in cutting-edge research and community services. We encourage faculty members and students to engage in research projects that address various challenges faced by Ethiopia and the global community. Our research efforts focus on areas such as sustainable energy, renewable resources, waste management, and environmentally friendly processes.
As the Department Head, I encourage each of you to engage actively in your studies, collaborate with your peers, and take advantage of the numerous opportunities available within our department. Your enthusiasm and commitment will play a crucial role in shaping our collective success.
Overall, the Chemical Engineering Department is dedicated for producing well-rounded professionals who can contribute to Ethiopia's development and play a significant role in shaping the country's future specially achieving the goal of agriculture to Industry transformation. Together, we can shape a bright and prosperous future for our community, and nation.
We Have Well-equipped Chemical engineering Laboratories:
1. Process control Lab
2. Mass transfer Lab
3. Thermal unit operation lab
4. Mechanical Unit operation Lab
5. Fluid mechanics Lab
Wishing you all a productive and inspiring year ahead!
Warm regards,
Mr. Tadele Bekele Abdisa
Head of the Department
Vision
The vision for chemical engineering is to contribute to sustainable development and improve the quality of life through the application of chemical principles and processes. The focus is on utilizing chemical engineering to address the country's specific challenges and needs, such as sustainable industrialization, renewable energy, water resource management, and agricultural productivity. This can be achieved by promoting research and innovation, fostering collaborations with industries and universities, and developing a skilled workforce in chemical engineering. Ultimately, the goal is to create a sustainable and prosperous future, in Ethiopia, by harnessing the power of chemical engineering
Mission
Chemical engineering department mission is to contribute to sustainable development and address the country's specific challenges going deeply in the communities. This includes promoting industrial growth, improving agricultural productivity, ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, and developing renewable energy sources. Ethiopia aims to utilize chemical engineering principles and technologies to enhance local manufacturing, increase value addition to natural resources, and create employment opportunities. Furthermore, Ethiopia recognizes the importance of collaboration with the global community to tackle global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and health issues through innovative chemical engineering solutions .
