About the Department

The animal science department was established in 2015 under the college of Agriculture and Forestry. The Department of Animal Science is one of the academic departments dedicated to the advancement of livestock production, animal health and welfare, animal breeding, nutrition, reproduction, and sustainable livestock development. The Department contributes to the teaching-learning process, research, community engagement, technology transfer, and professional development in the field of animal science.

The Department was established to respond to the growing demand for competent and skilled professionals capable of addressing the challenges and opportunities of Ethiopia's livestock sector. Through its academic programs, practical training, research activities, field-based learning, and community services, the Department works to produce graduates who possess the knowledge, technical skills, professional ethics, and entrepreneurial competencies required in modern livestock production and related sectors.

The Department focuses on major areas of animal production and management, including dairy cattle production, beef cattle production and fattening, sheep and goat production, poultry production, animal nutrition, animal breeding, reproductive biotechnology and artificial insemination, range management, livestock marketing, and livestock-based entrepreneurship.

The Department also collaborates with livestock producers, government institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, research institutions, and other stakeholders to promote demand-driven research, innovation, technology transfer, and sustainable livestock development.

Welcome to the Department of Animal Science!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Animal Science Bedele Campus Mattu University. Animal Science department is one of the department of College of Agriculture which is committed to contributing to the sustainable development of Ethiopia’s livestock sector through quality education, innovative research, community engagement, and demand-driven extension services.

Animal agriculture plays a vital role in improving food and nutrition security, generating employment and income, supporting rural livelihoods, and contributing to national economic development. Recognizing this important role, our department strives to produce competent, ethical, innovative, and practically oriented Animal Science professionals who can effectively respond to the current and emerging challenges of the livestock sector.

Our students are at the heart of everything we do. We provide them with a supportive learning environment that combines theoretical knowledge with practical training, field experience, research, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving skills. We encourage our students to develop professional competence, creativity, leadership, teamwork, integrity, and a strong commitment to serving society.

We also highly value our partners and stakeholders, including livestock producers, pastoralists and farmers, governmental and non-governmental organizations, private-sector enterprises, research institutions, professional associations, development partners, and communities.
