Capacity Building Training on Customary Courts News Image

(PIRE): Mattu University has successfully conducted a capacity building training on the Oromia Customary Courts Establishment and Recognition, focusing on Proclamation No. 240/2013 and Regulation No. 10/2014. The training brought together First Instance Customary Court Elders and Presidents of District Courts from Ilu Aba Bor Zone, aiming to strengthen their capacity in delivering fair, accessible, and culturally relevant justice.

Mr. Simagegnew Melaku, Head of the Office of the Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Service, emphasized the university’s commitment to community service, particularly in providing free legal support to economically disadvantaged individuals across Ilu Aba Bor and Bunno Bedele zones.

Miss Kadija Mohammed, President of Ilu Aba Bor Zone High Court, highlighted the vital role of customary court elders in ensuring justice at the grassroots level and appreciated Mattu University for its strong collaboration in serving the community. Participants noted that the training has enhanced their ability to better serve their communities through improved understanding of customary legal frameworks.

In recognition of outstanding performance, the Ilu Aba Bor Zone High Court awarded a computer to Becho District Customary Court for its exemplary service over the past nine months of the current budget year—encouraging continued excellence in community-based justice delivery.

The training was delivered in collaboration with the Directorate for Technology Transfer and Community Engagement of Mattu University, reaffirming the university’s dedication to community empowerment and legal service.
