(PIRE): Mattu University, in partnership with Bahir Dar University and HARNS, has officially launched a groundbreaking research initiative titled “Coffee Characterization and Socio-Economic Studies for Geographical Indication (GI) Certification and Recognition of Yayu Coffee.”

This landmark project represents one of Ethiopia’s pioneering efforts to advance Geographical Indication (GI) certification for coffee, paving the way for Yayu Coffee to gain stronger national and international recognition. The initiative brings together senior researchers from both universities to generate scientific evidence that will support the GI certification process while enhancing the value, identity, and global competitiveness of Yayu Coffee. As part of the project, a two-day awareness workshop is being held with key stakeholders from across the coffee value chain, including zonal and woreda administrators, coffee experts, research institutions, and NGOs.

Opening the workshop, Mattu University President, Dr. Alemu Disassa emphasized the vital role of stakeholders in securing, protecting, and sustaining the GI certification process. He also commended the strong collaboration among researchers and partner institutions driving this national initiative forward. Mattu University Academic Vice President, Dr. Bedilu Teka highlighted the project’s significance for coffee producers and Ethiopia’s coffee sector, particularly in strengthening value addition, competitiveness, and global recognition for Ethiopian coffee.
